This series is my favorite book series.
But this book is my least favorite in the series by far.
So much back and forth and not enough meaningful conversation between the main characters. It’s frustrating to watch

I had a lot of trouble getting to the finish line. The whole plot revolved around miscommunication and a love triangle (which is a trope that I absolutely hate - so it really didn’t help my negative view) that could have made sense if The Valley of Horses hadn’t happened. The angst was frustratingly kept up throughout the whole book it made the ending look rushed in comparison: in the last chapter, Jondalar and Ayla suddenly remembered that they should actually talk to each other.
I did really like the plot with the Mamutoi and the plot building for the other books. I’m really eager to find out what kind of “destiny”awaits Ayla.

Ayla and Jondolar somehow or another end up living with another tribe who hunts mammoths, hence the title. If there's one thing to be said for this series, Auel really makes every tribe of people we come across unique, and she uses her knowledge as an anthropologist to bring this time to life.
There was a bit of soap opera because Ayla doesn't understand consent, so sleeps with someone other than Jondolar because someone else asked her. Granted, monogamy wasn't a huge deal amongst the mammoth hunters, and it's not like Jondolar ever gave her a class ring or anything, so his reaction was over the top. But getting back to the consent issue, more accurately she doesn't understand that she can actually tell someone no. That is how she was raised, to obey the men's orders without hesitation, and the lack of exposure to anything else means she's not aware that she should even be checking in with herself if she's willing or not. (She is willing with Jondolar, don't get me wrong. But when the Incident happened, she simply didn't stop to consider if she wanted to.) It was uncomfortable to read as a teen. Not sure what I'd think about it now. Except that Jondolar was a dork.

Jean M Auel nos lleva a través de la prehistoria junto a personajes inolvidables, eventos, emocionantes y desenlaces inesperados que nos mantienen conectados a la historia. Una gran continuación de la historia de Ayla.
