It's quite surprising after all these years to have come across a Ronald Dahl book that I don't remember reading before. It started off with his usual zany, slightly terrifying, adventurous style. Then went a bit Enid Blyton (all safe and nice). I love both authors, but this isn't one of my favourite Dahl adventures. Love the madcap Quentin Blake illustrations though. What a perfect partner those two were.

I do love this beautiful message at the end though:

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.

Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

The minpins remind me of the Terry Pratchett's Rug people. This is a lovely story about childhood and friendship, once you're in these woods you can't get out, in a way or another.
