I liked the premise of this book. An evil Pan and a hero Hook battling to consume the power of a human dark/light fae.

There was so much this book could have done. While the story and plot was a good one I feel the ending was so abrupt and unsatisfying. I really disliked the ending. Did the world crumble to dust? Did all the fae light and dark, the humans, and all other creatures of Neverland perish? I wanted to know more.

I liked the story arch or Rowan. He was the best character for me. I disliked what became of Olivia, I felt she was a character that was lacking. I liked the lost boys. I am on the fence about Pan. I mean on one hand he is great as the flying dude who gets into mischief but making him evil seemed a hard thing to do. I would have liked to see him more committed to evil. With the back stories of the characters it would be nice to know his and how he came to be the thing he is now ect.

Go book over all. Just would have liked to read more.

Lovely, lovely book.

Like many dark fairytale retellings, Unhooked has a pleasantly eerie feel to it. The prose style is engaging and flowy. Gwen, although taking time, comes to terms with her fate. Captain Hook reminds me of Once Upon a Time's Captain Hook (good for me, since he is one of my favourite characters on the show). I wish there was more to the climax of the story, but other than that, I'm very pleased with Unhooked!

This hooked me really fast and for about the first hundred pages I couldn’t stop reading. At some point though it started losing my interest. Overall I thought it was a really good Peter Pan retelling, but for some reason once the story really got going I didn’t connect to it as much?

It was a really different take on Neverland as I know of Peter Pan but really good.

This book was one of my hardest to rate. I hesitated putting it under 3.0 because I for sure enjoyed it for what it was. It contained all the hallmarks of my more beloved stories. Even the AI generated personalized review, thought it would be a winner. But the writing didn’t grip me as much as my other 3.0 reviews and feels very strongly as if the larger story was just a means to flesh out a teenage ‘safe’ romance novel.

For context, at time of reading I am nearly 40 years old. I read a lot of middle grade fiction and YA books (because thats what my kids are reading) and rarely do I feel as if I am reading “below my level”.  The story felt like it was constantly reminding me that I was not its target age group.

Each chapter starts with a snippet of another story as it’s introduction. They were written in a very faux formal style, which quickly became cumbersome. Was it trying - and failing - to sound ‘grown up’? I imagined that the ‘story within a story’ would come full circle by the end. About halfway through, I realized where we were going with them. By the end, I found myself skimming them. They didn’t add anything, that could not have been accomplished by including the characters backstory within the text somehow.

‘Spicy’ novels aren’t my preference to begin with but the sexual tension was  thick and nearly immediate in the story. It was awkward, and presumably it was quite vanilla as MC is underage.

There was a surprising amount of child death described. Not extremely graphic, but grotesque enough to bother some for sure.

2/3 of the way into the book I really felt as if not nearly enough had happened for me to fathom how it would be wrapped up. Yet somehow knew exactly where it was going. The ‘plot twists’ felt predictable.

Other reviewers spoke of a surprise turn at the end, but I never saw it.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't what I expected, and a little predictable, but very good and enjoyable all the same.

It was easy to figure out plot twists etc, figure out who was the villain and who was the good guy. The MC was both annoying but also not, she definitely had decent character growth as the story went on. I'm not sure what purpose Olivia really served, scenes involving her were just annoying and pretty pointless.

The ending is actually very moving and almost poetic. A lovely way to wrap up the story, and leave the reader thinking about it for a while.

I really wanted to like this book, but it never gripped me. Characters' behavior and reactions didn't make sense to me a lot of the time, and they seemed to exist solely to drive the plot along. The romance felt random and unearned, and also Rowan ate little boys' souls?? Why would I root for him?? The plot rarely made sense to me, particularly with the twist at the end. Meh.

I am very surprised that this is the same author as The Last Magician.

The main character was just dumb. Her love interest was very much not interesting. The story just happened and the MC didn't do much to help move it. I also didn't like the abrupt ending.
