this book gave me what i needed. an easy-to-read, mysterious, funny, romantic book filled with plot-twists. was it the best book i’ve ever read? no, but it was enjoyable. i really enjoyed all the secrets the hawthorne house had to offer, with hidden passages and symbols around every corner. it fufilled my childhood dream of having a house with a secret tunnel to each room. what captivated me the most was probably the romantic side plots and constant indecisiveness about which brother i wanted avery to end up with. i think the author did this well without losing the plot throughout the book. i’m very excited to start the second book of the series ‘the hawthorne legacy’ after reading the teaser of the first 3 chapters in the inheritance games. this book is good if you’re wanting to get out of a reading slump or to indulge in the billionaire lifestyle on the side.overall, i’ve given this book a 3.75 star rating as i felt that it didn’t really stand out to me or connect with me enough to rate it any higher.

From someone who previously rated and delicately put it, this book was a humbling experience.

I would also say, regardless of my higher expectations, that this story fell flat for me. I wasn’t invested in the characters, half of the characters were self sabotaging (which doesn’t make for a fun read), and I didn’t feel that there was much at stake for Avery. The tropes in this story felt forced as well, as though the author was trying to mark off a checklist before publishing.

I honestly think that this book could have been improved if the protagonist(s) of this story were aged up a little, around college age instead of high school age. The teenage angst sours their personalities, and in turn sours the plot. Not to mention that the first hundred or so pages are not relevant to the story. Everything within those pages are red herrings, which would be fine if there was any ‘meat to chew on’ in between the fallacies
