Wow! This was a really good book! It is the most fast paced books I have ever read, the author Jennifer Lynn Barnes does not waste words and cuts right to the chase. I also loved the short chapters (around 3 pages long) as they allowed me to read how much i wanted to read. It was gripping. And the idea of the book - amazing. The whole time I was dying to know the twist.
Spoiler I did guess that the boys’ middle names’ were places, but that is the only thing i guessed
. It was very family friendly. I really loved and appreciated how the ‘clues’ in this book were not far fetched, it always made sense that the participants would discover and interpret them.
Spoiler The ending was interesting, at first I was like okay that’s cool, whatever. Then the last page before the epilogue had me shook. That is a good twist. I wish it could have ended with an in-depth letter from Mr Hawthorne but there is another book so i’ll just have to read that! I’m still a bit intrigued / confused by the Drake thing so the next book will hopefully clarify a bit more
. Very easy to read and very clever. Gave me ‘Rebecca’ by Daphne Du Maurier vibes

Okay, so this kind of thing is hard to win me over for, I don't really recall reading anything quite like it before. I picked this up because Chantel at An Intentional Life on Youtube recommended it, saying the next book would be coming out soon! I really like reading the first book a few months or weeks before the release date of the next book, so I can think about what happened and anticipate the next one with everyone else.

I read this book in one sitting, I was not going to put it down till I got to the end, and the end was satisfying, while also leaving some things to be uncovered in the next book!

The pacing is excellent, It takes about 38 pages to set up the character, how she's been living and how she feels about it. There's some mysterious happenings and intrigue builds up, and then the big reveal happens. I was hooked.

Barnes does pretty well with relationships and tension, I was confused for a bit though as Avery interacted with the Hawthorne boys, because they all felt the same to me for a while. There are little mysteries about the people in the Hawthorne House mixed in with the main mystery. I really enjoyed tension in this book. Though I wasn't a big fan of the romance. (It really didn't bug me as much as other books have though.)

Spoiler I KNEW that Harry was involved!(I said so in my goodreads updates) I didnt suspect him to be Tobias, but I knew he probably had something to do with it, and now he's one of the main parts of the next book!
I ship Avery and Grayson, but for a while when it looked like that wasnt actually going to happen, Jameson seemed okay... Not anymore though, I look foreward to whats going to happen!
