Interesting read, although it took me a while to get into at first, just because the actual love affair begins relatively early in the novel. I'm a fan of Madame Bovary, and I noticed quite some parallelisms between these two books. I think I appreciated how McGrath slowly fed the reader pieces of the mystery behind the "ghastly murder" of Edgar Stark's wife, and though parts of it were clearly predictable, there were other parts I just did not see coming. Will not go on further...don't want to give any more away!

All’inizio della storia il libro è assolutamente avvincente, cattura e non annoia nonostante i dettagli minuziosi. A circa metà si blocca in una monotonia devastante: il racconto non procede in nessuna direzione, diventa veramente noioso è difficile da portare a termine. Vero la fine un paio di episodi rilanciano il ritmo ma niente di che. Particolare il finale, molto contorto secondo me, un po’ alla Shutter Island

prevedibile, ma aveva un potenziale altissimo.
la prima parte era interessante, la parte centrale personalmente è il fulcro del libro, non riuscivo a staccarmi. il finale purtroppo lo avevo già intuito da tanto e ho trovato alcune cose veramente fuori luogo e scontate?
non mi è dispiaciuta come lettura nel complesso. ci sta come lettura per iniziare l'anno
