The one line reviews make it seem like it’s going to be this gritty juicy horror book, but aside from very detailed gore and body horror / injury descriptions the plot wasn’t actually scary. I think the author tried to make it a psychological thriller but made the MC so uniquely and extravagantly insane that you could see right through to the end. The world building was meh, the prose wasn’t distracting. It’s like a less vibrant version of a fan fiction mash up of 2001, Firefly and Levithan Wakes. It did them all a disservice. That’s said, not my worst read this year

Dead Silence takes sci-fi horror to a new level as it merges the story of the Titanic with the terror of Stephen King's The Shining

Claire prefers being out in space to being confined to Earth. To Claire's dismay, this is her last mission before her employer terminates her. The rest of her crew is ready to go home after long months in space, but when they receive a distress signal from the famous Aurora, a ship that was wrecked 20 years ago and never found, Claire and her crew decide they just have to check it out to see what they can find. This salvage could set them up for life, and they would be famous for just discovering the Aurora. But when the crew boards the Aurora, they find things, and people, they didn't expect to. Soon they are unsure how to determine what is reality and how they're going to get off this ship alive.

This book is addictive, to say the least. S.A. Barnes takes readers on a wild ride as the crew discovers horrors they never thought possible on the Titanic-esque spacecraft. Claire makes an excellent main character as readers struggle to decipher which parts of her story are true.

From the great twists to the many jump scares, Dead Silence is sure to satisfy all fans of sci-fi, horror, mysteries, and thrillers.

I didn't like the audiobook as much, but still very good. Just the right amount of spooky and I enjoyed the ending.

I couldn’t put this book down!

The Shining is one of my all time favorite horror books and s this took some of the same concepts but mashed it with Titanic/Poseidon and threw it all in space.

Could it have been scarier? Maybe, but there is something so unnerving about people causing the issues and it not being fully supernatural. The lengths companies will go to, to be on top and what they’re willing to do if anyone gets in the way is something you can see happening in real life (and I can tell you we as humans have seen this before done).

As the lone survivor of two major events and not knowing that the people who are protecting you and helping to raise you after all your family is gone, is actually just using you as good publicity. Claire must try and piece together what is real and what isn’t in order to not only save herself but any other survivors as well as expose the company she thought was on her side. When you can’t tell the difference between what is and isn’t real, in a fit for your life, what lengths would you go to in order to survive?

Solid 4 stars, for all that I called the main baddie early on.

The book structure is odd, as the interesting part (them exploring the ship, figuring out what's going on, etc.) is mostly the first half of the book and even that is broken up by "now" sections where Clair is telling the story to someone else.  That slows things down, and then things slow down even further around 60% through when
Claire is sent back to the ship alongside a corporate security team.  Getting back there and getting back to figuring out what's going on just seems to drag, and that hiccup in pacing is why 4 starts rather than 5, really.

Other than that, though, the book was absorbing and creepy, to the point where I had to stop reading it before bed, and it also had a surprising amount of heart to it - it's a tragedy, but the affection of the crew for each other holds strong.  There's even a somewhat happy ending - it's messy and bloody and gross in parts, but it's not entirely hopeless, and in the end
I even liked how Claire's ghost-seeing and the tragedy she'd been through with it helped her on the Aurora, how the ghosts sometimes helped her, and how in the end she continues to live with it all.

I absolutely LOVED this book, I was hooked from the first chapter and I was telling everyone I knew about it, I even told a customer at work about (I work at a doggie daycare lol). The story is interesting and I think the direction the author went in was interesting regarding Claire. I LOVED the twist. In all honesty I put this book down for a bit because of life and work, but the twist sucked me right back in and held on tight until I was done. I was a bit disappointed the book ended where it did, and honestly I would devour an entire book about the Aurora’s voyage, the ship is so fascinating. HUGE RECOMMEND!!
