I have only just started reading this book, and I'm already irritated. The writing style is different from what I typically read. I can't quite put my finger on what is annoying me. It could be the useless tidbits of information that are put in, as if to up the word count, OR, it could be things like... "I STAND in front of my window".... "I SIT there for a long time".... speaking about the same moment. There's no continuity.

I didn't expect to like 'The Cruel Prince' as much as I did since it's mostly about politics/political intrigue but I found myself really enjoying it. It's my first peak into faerie fantasy books and I'd say this is a pretty good pick. If you're going to pick up this book please keep in mind that any romance is a subplot so don't expect much but it is SO worth it. Jude is a very complex protagonist and I absolutely love her, she's so flawed and human which just makes me love her even more. Btw, I adore Vivi, I'm so happy to see a sapphic character as a sapphic myself. I can't wait to pick up the second book as soon as my book buying ban is over.

Conflicts and characters felt unbearably contrived - I could not for the life of me find the issues posed believable (yes I know it's a fantasy, and I love fantasy, but a lot of the characterizarion & problems felt messy to me); and the writing (prose and dialogue) just didn't do it for me.

WOW.
I started reading this book because i saw it under an "enemies to lovers" booktok video and I went into it with high hopes. At first I was extremely disappointed and wasn’t really into it, but I found myself slowing falling in love with jude. I love a mc with female rage and let me tell you, jude is an amazing personification of this trope. I couldn’t help but stick around wanting to see what moves she made next and slowly but surely this book/series has me obsessed. if you want enemies to lovers please stick around because jude and cardan, CHEFS KISS. Give it a chance.
