A beautifully written saga about Anh and her two brothers, who flee as refugees from Vietnam in the 1970s and eventually end up in the UK. I found Anh's story achingly sad but, in the end, hopeful as she gradually builds a life for herself and her family. Pin's writing is stunning, with the story mainly told from Anh's perspective but with snippets from other perspectives, moving forwards and back through time to add layers of depth to the story.

Heart-wrenching and chilling, hopeful and warm; this novel manages to cover the expanse of decades and the complexity of displacement, trauma, loss, family and identity in a short number of pages - add the unearthing of Vietnamese history, of lore and literature, and at a technical level Wandering Souls is truly impressive, though it's the spirit of this novel that will stick with any reader. The beginning was compelling and, contrary to other readers, I thought the ending was wonderful, moving and appropriate, hitting all the right notes. Not always easy to read, but ultimately stunning.
