I picked this up on a whim at a cruise ship library. Jane Austen was such a brilliant writer. I'm curious as to whether or not she knew one or two real Lady Susans, given how authentically hateful and manipulative the character is, and seeing the events unfold from so many different perspectives added depth to everyone involved. It's very clear by the end that Lady Susan is not only jealous of Frederica, but she resents having been married to her father in the first place. The conclusion is both satisfying and frustrating, but that makes for a well-rounded, believable story.
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Toxic relationship, and Abandonment

All in all it is a great book but I don't think it is just as good as other works by Jane Austen. I loved how she created this kind of villain and especially the way Lady Susan deals with her daughter made me loathe her so much. Frederica definitely deserved better. Another thing I enjoyed were the characters in general, the soft and shy Frederica, the lovable Catherine etc. I just believe that the characters could have had more depth which is complicated, I admit, since the book is so short but the way that it is written would have allowed it. The whole concept of a book telling a story trough letters is ingenious and I really adored it. You could really imagine them writting those letters passionately. A quite decent book.

I did not know this was actually an epistolary roller-coaster, it 100% reads like having personal knowledge of a grifter, seeing them succeed on the internet with their lies, and being unable to prevent it. I was stressed, even.
