Never Greener by Ruth Jones was nothing like I expected it to be and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It follows the story of an affair at multiple points over the years and the lives surrounded the two couples. Kate and Callum are the characters having the affair and they are the most unlikable characters in the book, their flaws and all the problems they are causing are pointed out.

The book is set at three different points: 1985, 2002 and 2017. In 1985, Kate and Callum are introduced and start their affair. 2002 sees them meeting each other again, how they handle this and how their lives are happening around them. 2017 is a very short portion of the book, just saying how the story wrapped up really. I liked the now-and-then element as it helped the reader to understand the relationships between characters further. Despite being set over such a huge time, there weren't any elements which would make the book seem dated. In 2002, there are a few mentions of texting and mobile phones being a new thing but otherwise it was written in a way that could be almost timeless.

I liked the format of the book. The story was told through multiple different perspectives: Kate, Callum, Matt, Belinda and a few chapters are from the perspectives of side characters like Hetty. I liked this as it meant you could really understand how each character felt. I also liked that the book was told in lots of short chapters, as I find this easiest to read.

I expected to really not enjoy this book but it surprised me. I found it gripping and interesting and really wanted to know what was going to happen next.
