This book made my character-loving heart incredibly happy.

A book about two ministers and their wives may not seem exciting to you, but I promise this story is worth it. If you like books that explore themes of faith and love, friendship and family, that really dive in to a character study, you'll like this one. I did the audiobook in one day during a road trip; it captivated me that much.

The story shows us the lives of each of our four main characters, from childhood to adulthood, with an omniscient POV so we know everything about them. What made them who they are as adults, their struggles, their morals. These characters feel real, and though they do sometimes do things you may not agree with, their decisions are understandable. You can tell the author really loves her characters. I loved how they interacted with each other, and even with the other side characters, who feel just as realistic.

The plot is there, but it is slow-paced. It picks up a lot toward the end, where there's some heartbreaking stuff. But this well-written novel will stick with you, these characters, their ups and downs, their love—it will all leave you pondering and ruminating over your own life choices.

This is my book club's July pick and I can't wait to discuss it with them!
