Possibly my favorite book ever.

I do not understand the bevy of 5-star reviews, unless it's because people read this in middle school. The narrative is jilted and full of Card's inability to show instead of telling. The dialogue is at times atrocious. But it's backstory for the series after, and Card seems to have written it as such. Just the things you need to know going forward. So it gets a pass, to a degree.

I have to admit that I saw the movie first. However, the novel was better, and rock-solid, in my opinion.

It was an interesting enough book - it definitely kept my attention and kept me turning the pages. (I am having a hard time seeing where this will be an interesting movie at all though.)

As much as Card wants to alienate the main character, you do connect to the boy on a personal level, because at one point or another in life, everyone has felt alone, manipulated and tricked. The fact that this is all happening to a child makes you even more empathetic I think.

Good book overall, but I don't think I'll read more into the series.

One of the best Sci-Fi books you will ever read. Surprising, interesting, fast-paced, and intelligent.

I love this book so much!

-Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be.

- I don't care if I pass your test, I don't care if I follow your rules. If you can cheat, so can I. I won't let you beat me unfairly - I'll beat you unfairly first.

- I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.

- Because never in my entire childhood did I feel like a child. I felt like a person all along―the same person that I am today.

- Humanity does not ask us to be happy. It merely asks us to be brilliant on its behalf.

- There are times when the world is rearranging itself, and at times like that, the right words can change the world

- So the whole war is because we can't talk to each other.

- You're a monster.
Thanks. Does this mean I get a raise?
No, just a medal. The budget isn't inexhaustible.

- I will remember this, thought Ender, when I am defeated. To keep dignity, and give honor where it's due, so that defeat is not disgrace. And I hope I don't have to do it often.

The central focus of this book is on the military and its training program for genius children during a time of war. While the psychological and physical effects of this program are revealed in detail and provide much to think about in regards to the costs of war, the larger societal/universal context was a bit lacking for me. I would have liked to have more information on the buggers earlier, and more about the society and what happened to bring it to the point we found it at in the beginning of the story.

description

So, toddlers ... fighting with each other... for the sake of humanity.... not my cup of tea.

This was a very uncomfortable read. I can't make a good opinion about this but I think this book is too over-hyped. This book is good but not good enough for me to like. I nearly DNF'd this one because it feels like the story is so meta and all over the place that Ender- genius who is only 6 years old (how messed up is that ) feels pretentious.

I didn't like the plot, I wasn't expecting that this highly rated book has a below-average plot.This
book is weird. Not good weird-- a bad-uncomfortable-why-am-I-still-reading-this weird.

Anyway, it was decent- I guess? Not for me but hey I enjoyed the experience
