The sequel in this series does a good job of replicating the layers of intrigue and deception that the first on introduced. The world building is still beautiful however the direct and obvious ties to existing cultures is a little unsettling to me.

The real downside to this one was that it felt like the last 100 pages could have easily been condense. Or well, I would love for all the books to be cut in half as the first half always feels like a very different adventure. Instead the resolution always feels long and drawn out because there are so many threads that need to be settled.

In the second book of the Kushiel's Legacy series, Phedre and her Cassiline, Joscelin, journey to La Serenissima in search of Melisande. But, as always, there is more to the game than anyone suspects at first. Phedre must learn to navigate her way through a whole new politcal climate and use all her wits to try and decipher the clues she has which lead her on a not so merry journey across the seas, where she encounters pirates, gods, and ancient rituals. She is forced to look at herself in a new light time and time again, and make sacrifices she never thought she would have needed.

I was happy to see so many of my favorite characters back for a second book. The change of scenery and introduction of the La Serenissiman characters was the perfect addition to her already fantastic mix. The people and the setting meshed in a way that improved the flow of the story. Throwing in the action, which never seems to stop for Phedre, you have the perfect combination for an amazing book.

Another fun adventure in the Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series; this one has Phèdre nó Delaunay travel to La Serenissima (the alternate world version of Venice) to track down her arch nemesis Melisande who is in hiding there. As always, far more of the world is visited, Phèdre wins the loyal friendship of various people she meets, and saves various days, but not before risking death several times.

I very much enjoyed this! Kushiel’s Dart is a hard act to follow, and it definitely wasn’t quite that good, but what is? As an adventure, it has all one might like from an epic story such as this: Political scheming, betrayal, unlikely allies. If you liked Kushiel’s Dart, you will probably like this. If you didn’t like Kushiel’s Dart, then this won’t convert you.

Spoiler I do wish Joscelin and Phedre had made amends far sooner than at the end-ish, because I want to see more awesome adventures of them together, but I suppose that’ll be the next book.

I was really enjoying this until I saw what was going to happen well before the character did, and that felt untrue to the character, she's smarter than that. I stopped listening (it was an audiobook) at that point for a while. I put it aside for several weeks. When I went back to it I could manage and found that the rest of the events worked and I should have trusted the author. After that I had to finish listening to the book. Thank you.
