The government was never scared of the kids who might die, or the empty spaces they would leave behind.
They were afraid of us—the ones who lived.

Wow this book was a roller coaster, mostly the last 25% though, considering it was really hard to get into at first. I'm not the biggest sci-fi or dystopian fan, but I really want to like this series, since I've heard so many good things about it.

“We want you,” he said, his hand slipping through my hair to cup the back of my neck. “We wanted you yesterday, we want you today, and we’ll want you tomorrow. There’s nothing you could do to change that. If you’re scared and you don’t understand your crazy abilities, then we’ll help you understand—but don’t think, not for one second, that we would ever just leave you.”

Overall... this book wasn't that great, far from a good start to a series, and I know it may have to do with the fact that I'm not too fond of the genre, but it was also the writing and the characters. The writing.. idk.. it wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing or all that memorable either?

As for the characters though, I liked Liam, Chubs and Zu.
Though not Ruby... I'm sorry...... but I had problems with her narration. I'd expect to like the protagonist a whole lot more... but she was pretty boring... and annoying... and irritating on her own.

I'll admit she was likeable when she was interacting with others, which makes it worse. I want to like her for her, not how she is with other characters I do like. It makes me feel like I only like her because she's around people I like, and that's all there is to her? IDK I hope she gets better.

I would be more interested in the book despite the genre and okay writing if she were a protagonist lead who I loved. The plot itself was alright too. But I think that is because of the genre, there's only one kind of thing you can expect in dystopia/apocalyptic settings, because that's what those genres mean, and others love it. But for me that's exactly why I don't; it just feels cliché to me personally.

“Hi, darlin’, missed you something fierce.”

I've seen this line before ajkhdsjh now I know where it's from lmao.

Oh, and the pacing too!! With everything happening, I'd think it would be fast and action packed but it felt slow. I don't know why. It's not like everything was still and not much was happening, quite the opposite really, but it was still so darn slooooooww.

“Did you know…you make me so happy that sometimes I actually forget to breathe? I’ll be looking at you, and my chest will get so tight…and it’s like, the only thought in my head is how much I want to reach over and kiss you.” He blew out a shaky breath. “So don’t talk about getting me out of here, because I’m not leaving, not unless you’re part of the package, too.”

WHY DID RUBY DO THA T SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT. IDK HOW I FEEL, I MEAN I'M ANRGY BUT I KNOW WHY SHE DID THAT, SO I'M UPSET TOO IDK, IDK, IDK!!!!

“The darkest minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces.”

Anyway!! It was an okay book, if not for the last quarter I don't think I'd be as inclined to continue this series.
SpoilerI've got a bad feeling there won't be much of him next book though...

I know that I am very late to the game with this one, and honestly, had it not been chosen recently as the pick for a bookclup I run, I never would have read it. But I am so glad I did!

I will admit that this book falls victim to being released around the time when dystopians were at the height of their popularity. Had I read this back then, it possibly would have been a five star read for me, but I have to now take into consideration some of the over-done tropes and cliche'd areas that you typically find within the YA Dystopian genre.

With that being said, this book was such a surprise for me. I enjoyed it immensly and loved our many set of characters. I will absoultey be picking up the sequel eventually!

I forgot how much I enjoy dystopian novels. The action, the looovvee, the humor, and the twist of society that none of us expect. This book was interesting and an easy read. I had only a few problems that knocked it down:::
Liam and Ruby’s relationship had no build up till after they were together. I am a sucker for the romance in all books, so when they have one page they are friends and the next they are kissing and holding each other’s hand, it messes with the balance of the frustrating rising love of the relationship.
The writing repeated its self a lot. As I said, very easy read, but the more it repeats the more annoyed I get at the same phrases being used in the same chapter or the same word being used 3 times a page.
Clancy I had a problem with because of the way they portrayed him. In the beginning you don’t like him because “oh this guy is the 3rd in the triangle”, then you don’t like him in the middle because he was a grade-A douche to Ruby, now you figure out he is actually the bad guy? I think the author should have made him likable so the shock of him being the bad guy was more powerful.
Next, and probably my most petty problem, was the Jack’s letter ordeal. My problem wasn’t about chubs getting shot, but the fact that they made jack unlikable by that one letter. My theory is Hack is still alive, but the letter he left just ruined all the descriptions Chubs and Liam made him out to be.

I struggled very much to care about the characters or plot of this book. I found it very boring, and honestly just couldn’t wait for it to end. This one just wasn’t for me, I’m sad to say.

I don't know what to think of this. There were so many aspects that I really didn't like about this book, but then there was Liam, who I absolutely loved and the ending which was amazing even though it broke my heart into so many peaces. Things never turned out the way I thought they would, so that's good. And we had all these viallains where you didn't really know they were bad, although you could've guessed it. I'm not sure if I wanna continue this series, because it just took me forever to read this book and I don't know if it would be all that interesting, but knowing me, I will probably read it someday.
