very girlboss of brittany cavallaro to have the last book in the series be lighthearted and cute after 3 previous installments of stress and angst and high blood pressure
“Outside, she was waiting for me, her hands clasped together in the sun. I hadn’t had to say a word. She’d already known what I was thinking.”

CAWPILE Breakdown:
Characters: 8
Atmosphere: 5
Writing: 8
Plot: 3
Intrigue: 4
Logic: 7
Enjoyment: 4
I loved this series, but this conclusion is a major letdown. The series was always Jamie's story and I liked that is mirrored the Sherlock Holmes books in that we saw the story through Watson's eyes rather than Holmes's eyes. Book 3 was a mix of Charlotte and Jamie and I enjoyed that, but this book was all Charlotte and I did not like not seeing Jamie's perspective of everything happening. I also found the mystery less exciting than in previous installments.

I have to say, I hesitated between giving this book 4 or 5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely ADORED the Charlotte Holmes series.
And that’s exactly why it pained me that I had trouble getting into this last book. It was a stark contrast to the fast-paced, plot-driven stories of the first three, and that fell a little flat for me.
Things picked up around chapter 18, and that’s when I got the feeling I’d had back when I was reading the first books.
One constant throughout the whole series though, is Holmes and Watson’s relationship. The impossible complexity of their characters arcs, the intensity of their bond, their fiery dynamic, their witty dialogue. I LOVED IT. ALL OF IT.
In this book, we only get Charlotte’s POV (Except for the epilogue which is told from Jamie’s) and although I missed Watson’s voice, Holmes’s was amazingly refreshing.
All in all, this series is fabulous.
A modern-day Sherlock story, with characters that never felt more real.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud
