Thirsty Mermaids, by Kat Leyh

Sorry this is dumb. It does get better as it goes but overall it's stupid. Two mermaids and a sea witch run out of alcohol (which they find on sunken ships) so they decide to turn themselves into humans just to find more booze. Of course, they then have trouble figuring out how to go back into the sea as mermaids. There's a tiny story line about friendship mixed in so that's why three stars instead of two.

This one was one of the curated book pics from one of the bibliologists at @gettbr and they nailed it!

We follow a pod of 3 mermaids who are having a little too much fun and decide to use their magic to become human for a night to continue their fun on land!

But the only problem is, they can’t remember how to turn themselves back into mermaids. Hilariousness ensues while they try to figure out the whole human thing and find the spell to turn them back.

I enjoyed this so much and loved the the artwork, the colors, and really the whole aesthetic.

Definitely looking forward to reading more graphic novels in the future!

This was real cute! A found family of magical semi-nude, not familiar with capitalism, merfolk go on land in search of alcohol. This follows them as they procure the drinks, try to find their way home, and find another member of their pod. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a quick, woman-centric, queer comic with found family.

This was so sweet and fun! It's a strange, wild, polyamorous love story about queer outcast mermaids getting stuck on land after transforming themselves into humans for a night so they can get drunk and party at a bar. Leyh packs so much into what feels like a simple story - discussion of body dysmorphia and identity, the growing pains of a chosen family navigating fraught circumstances, even some fun commentary on capitalism. I love Leyh's illustration style and the real MVPs here are the character designs and the COLORS. So fuckin' good! The stuff about body dysmorphia and identity is a bit more direct but Pearl is fat and loves her body (and does wild things with it; even as a human she... doesn't need to breathe oxygen very much and can swim really far) and Tooth is big and super butch, and is also very comfortable in her body. It all makes sense, too - they're mermaids and mermaids are not human! They don't have our culture of body hangups, nor does it make sense in their underwater world to have them. It's very freeing and cool to read.

Tried to get back in to this where I was at, but I’ve forgotten too many of the details. I don’t feel up to starting again, so this is being DNFed for the end of the year clear out of my reading list

Well that was darn tootin'! I loved it!

Unexpected...but deep; like literally and figuratively. Can we also just take a moment to acknowledge how visually pleasing this book is as well. Like the art work so vivid, beautiful!

We have gender issues, identity issues, friendships, being outcast...like we covered a lot in this read.

There really isn't much to say, you have to read it yourself. It really is a magical experience with a few drinks on the way!

4 boozy stars!
