I don’t have much to say about this as it has run together with the first which I think is a strength of the series. The completely intertwined storylines are smart and intricate and hold the story together perfectly.

Such a mastery of crafting the characters and plot to thicken and grow in complexity over time. The reader is trusted with increasingly complex, interesting, unbelievably imaginative worlds of magic and oregeny, and it's such a delicious reading experience.

this book was SO SLOW but it really expanded on the incredible world established in The Fifth Season. the magic, the science, was all extremely fascinating and i was continually perplexed and in awe of this universe.

i had to stop reading about 1/3rd through because of a few of the trigger warnings i list below, but i am very glad i kept going.

NK Jemisin has such a unique way with words and her characters are all so tangible and emotive. Essun and Alabaster ripped my heart out time and time again, and i empathized with Nassun on so many unexpected  levels. i cannot wait to read the (what i have heard will be) thrilling conclusion to the trilogy.

Second book syndrome (or maybe the other books in the trilogy were just too good).

not as good as the fifth season, but nowhere near bad. the entire book is a slowburn for the real plot coming in towards the end, but i didn’t mind what i was reading in the meantime.

What can I say about this book?

This is an excellent sequel to the Fifth Season. You feel the urgency of everything that is at stake. This book does an amazing job on answering questions about the world and broadening the scope. It was a masterful on its inclusion of new characters, and lore.

Nassun, Nassun my sweet girl. WOW. Talk about a character that will break your heart. Her journey and transformation through this book is one of the most expertly crafted storylines. Her and Schaffa made me question myself constantly.

Hoa!! I love how through the writing we get a clear view of the relationship between him and Essun. Alabaster!! My sweet, broken Alabaster! We do get a cute little sapphic side relationship with Tonkee and Hjarka, which in a world of pure misery was really needed. YKKA! What a fantastic character, truly just love a badass leader.

Essun.... People always talk about "badass female characters" and the fact that Essun is never in that list is sacrilegious. Essun is a 43 year old woman, who has gone through some truly horrendoux things, and continues to grow and protect those around her. I love Essun, she is a beautiful example of a strong female character in more ways than just one.

I didn't give this book 5 stars because the plot was fairly slow. Yes there was a very good reason for this but I personally would have liked more. That isn't to say that there aren't moments that will literally make you skin crawl.

On to book 3!!
