I finished this book in public so I couldn’t cry but had I been alone I likely would have. Such a beautiful and heartbreaking moments that still managed to steal a few laughs from me due to Gyasis incredible writing and wit. I loved this book!

Transcendent Kingdom is a heart wrenching and reflective exploration into themes of addiction, mental health and religion. Gifty’s journey with Christianity and subsequent deconstruction journey was extremely relatable and I loved how the nuance with which it was explored. Gyaasi’s writing is poetic without being overly flowery, and her ability to make me connect and feel each character’s emotions is masterful. And excellent read.

This novel by Yaa Gyasi is incredible. The narrator reflects on her life story when her depressed mother comes to live with her. It tells a moving story about immigration, addiction, depression, and science and religion. The language and writing style is exquisite. I binged it in four days.
