This book is dark, challenging and at the same time a brilliant read. It's unique and terrifying. A gorgeously terrifying story that speaks of a magical world but feels more mortal than anything. Its violent and cruel and stunning.

Dating, yes. Transgressive, yes. But also surprisingly tedious after a while. The clunky injections of historical research and period set-dressing make it infuriatingly choppy. The William Burroughs chapters are the worst - they read like someone showing off.

“I delivered (my fingertip) as a young man to my psychiatrist one day and he did not appreciate it.”
“He clearly never had a cat”’

‘“Well Peter… today you can call me zeus”’ *stabs him in the throat*

I appreciate the through time in the same building but also its quite frustrating when the individual stories dont have a beginning or end?
