I liked this book for the same reasons I disliked it: objectivity and brevity. For the sake of a historical guidebook, it had to be both things. There is a lot of information in here and I'm sure the breadth could be doubled since LA has a long history but what's in there is useful for current understanding of LA's social+political+ethnic landscape.
