This was tough. The shared names among the family paired with a tangled chronology that occasionally skips to the future then stutters backward and makes you question who is dead or alive or is this actually their grandson? makes it a challenge to keep up with, possibly made worse because I listened to the audio book. But it was so worth it.

Esse livro é uma obra de arte. Sério. É lindo, emocionante e universal. A narrativa de Gabo é de uma singularidade tão bonita, que eu falo pra vocês que qualquer palavra minha não vai chegar nem perto de traduzir o que essa história me proporcionou. É um livro sobre muitas coisas, claramente sobre um lugar e sobre sete gerações de uma família que repetia nomes um bocado, mas também sobre o tempo, sobre amor, sobre solidão, guerras e um milhão de temas que vem junto com o fato de se existir humano nesse mundo. É lírico sem deixar de ser chocante, e apesar de algumas vezes ter ficado confusa com os acontecimentos (nem sempre lineares), todas as paginas vieram carregadas de encantamento. Nunca consultei tanto uma arvore genealógica na vida, e acredito de verdade que esta é uma leitura para ser feita com calma e com carinho. Tenho certeza que uma releitura não vai demorar para acontecer, não poderia indicar mais! Vale cada segundo.

This book is about the journey; not the destination.  When I was halfway through, I still didn't understand why this book was so loved. It took patience and a willingness to let go of my expectations to be able to appreciate this book fully.
