Can appreciate this is artistically &iintellectually a good book but was never properly emotionally invested and burned too many calories trying to remember which Buendia was which.
Also not a fan of the treatment sexual violence.
You get its point, though. Nothing really changes, time doesn't exist, everyone is the same, free will isn't a thing, everyone is alone & weird & misunderstood etc

Wow. Folks, I have got THOUGHTS on this book. Up to the last two chapters, I would not have said I was enjoying this book, in spite of being amazed by the undeniable brilliance of the writing. The plot seems to ramble all over the place, with events that I expected to be ultimately climactic in nature being nearly thrown away in the narrative. On top of that there were lots of scenes and events that made me feel deeply "squicky" (check the trigger warnings on this book before you read it, because there are some doozies). However, just when I would nearly make up my mind to stop reading, I would encounter a phrase or a piece of imagery that was so breathtaking that it would keep me reading. And then, as the book ended in a whirlwind of revelation and fulfilled prophesy, I was so glad that I finished the story.

Even so, I don't think I can honestly give the book more than three stars, even for the brilliance of the final chapters. I don't think it makes up for the unnecessarily graphic descriptions of the Buendia family's hereditary vices.

everything i’ve heard about this book has been that it’s the “greatest literary work of all time” or other extreme raves on the genius of the story. i didn’t hate the book, but i definitely didn’t get why people rave over it so much. it honestly didn’t really make sense to me, and even though my lit teacher says that being confused is just part of the experience of reading the book, i tend to not really enjoy a story when i really have no idea what’s going on and who is who. there was also a lot in the book that was just weird, or frankly wrong. for example, there was a lot of incest, which just made me kind of uncomfortable. furthermore, i thought this story would have a lot to do with colonization and how europeans destroyed this town, but it didn’t really seem to be about that. it was just a very drawn out, confusing story that i didn’t understand the purpose of. maybe if it was clearer what the meaning is i would have enjoyed it more.
