An absolute gem - I took to reading a whakatauki each morning and enjoyed the translation and the explanation and thoughts on meaning. An enjoyable read alongside being a great reference book and probably something every office in New Zealand should have and use.

Hinemoa writes eloquently about the things that matter and gives practical strategies for how to realign ourselves with them, an especially necessary read after the year that has just passed.

This is a nonfiction book that is filled with little snapshots of common or popular sayings within the Māori people (New Zealand indigenous people). I think it’s a nice book. I would recommend this to anyone to have and just peruse to gain insight or messages to reflect on throughout their day to day. I think many would work as a good affirmation or mantra as well, if that’s something you’re into.

It was interesting to read the whakatauki and learn about that aspect of Māori culture. There were snippets of Māori history and practices, but I think I went into the book hoping to learn more about Māori culture than I ended up coming away from it with. Not quite what I was looking for but still good, I just don’t think the pace of having short reflections of a couple of pages on each whakatauki fits with my reading style.
