I really enjoyed this book! It was a quick read and very fast paced. The story was different than a traditional "romance" novel, which is great because I generally don't care much for romance novels. Actually, I never do- so this was great! The characters were likeable and realistic, and I enjoyed the storyline in general. Definitely will read the sequel!

I really, really enjoyed this one. When I was only 25% in I knew that I would be reading the next two books in this series...very soon!!

The premise of this book is like nothing I've ever read before. It had a little bit of everything. Psychology, mafia, drugs, murder, suspense, sex, A MAN IN UNIFORM, conflict, and most importantly romance. Sweet, sweet romance.

Most of the time when reading I have a horrible time remembering character names outside of the main protags (it's horrible, I know!). However in this one I had no trouble what so ever remembering each and every character name because I truly feel like I know each and every one of them.

Sophie -strong, yet insecure she just so happens to be one of my favorite female leads ever. (Psychology fascinates me!)
Grant - strong, sexy, a good guy trapped in a bad family was SO swoonworthy!!
Uncle Joe - Love him!
Kirsten -Best friend/roommate ever!
Officer Stone - A hard-ass parole officer with a heart of gold.
Roger Eaton - Smart-ass and so funny.
Logan - Bad guy but somehow I still had a soft spot for him.
Ben - Grants nephew, Logan's son. On the wrong path but I'm hoping they can straighten him out.
Angelo, Enzo, Carlo and many more...each of them are ingrained in my memory because the writing is just THAT good.

I won't get into details because so much happens and I think every needs to experience it all for themselves. Just be prepared to laugh, cry, swoon, fan yourself, and more than likely chew your manicure all to hell. Also...NO CLIFFHANGER!! Even still I cannot wait to see what happens next!!!

This was an emotionally intense book that was equal parts mafia suspense and romance. It had a nice amount of "steam" and the romance started off slowly and made sense. There were parts of the story that were very dark and I honestly had to stop a few times in order to get through those scenes.

Jennifer Lane is a terrific writer and I look forward to reading "Bad Behavior". :)

I did a lot of swooning while reading With Good Behavior.

Grant Madsen and Sophie Taylor meet in an unconventional way, but as soon as they do, sparks fly. They are drawn to one another instantly. Grant and Sophie both found themselves in legal trouble due to someone elses conniving ways.

Grant is ex-military and is struggling with the downfall of his career and his family history.

Sophie, a promising psychologist loses her career after being taken advantage of by a mobster. (Does that get your attention or what?!)

Grant goes out of his way to help Sophie out, wanting to see her get back on her feet even if he can't himself.

Both have been burned by family and love but as time goes on they can't push aside their feelings for each other. Unfortunately, there is a tie between them but neither realizes it until it's too late. The revelation almost tears them apart.

Grant does his best to protect Sophie, sometimes even risking his own parole and safety. As the story unravels and everything become clear those that put Sophie and Grant behind bars are finally caught up with.

Through out the unveiling of Sophie and Grant's story I found myself rooting for and loving them more and more. Jennifer Lane weaves a lovely story that leaves me hoping for even more.

WGB ended leaving me warm and fuzzy inside. I absolutely loved it.

Sophie and Grant are good people who ended up in prison and meet at their parole officer's office after they get out. I loved the premise and the book did not disappoint. Romance, humor, suspense, great characters. Made me laugh and cry. So glad there is a sequel because I need more.

Grant Marsden and Sophie Taylor meet, briefly, outside their parole officers office soon after their releases from prison. Grant had just spent the past two years in Gurnee State Prison for aggravated robbery while Sophie spent a year in a woman's prison for accessory charges. Neither of them know how link their lives are.

From their brief meeting outside their PO's office, both Grant and Sophie are drawn to each other. But it's not until Grant offers Sophie a supportive hug and helps her find a job that they really take the time to talk to one another. Agreeing not to talk about what landed them in jail or who they were in the past, they set out to get to know one another.

Grant is the youngest son to Mafia Godfather, Vincenzo (Enzo) Barberi. The man was an abusive drunk who terrorize Grant, his older brother Logan and their mother. While their mother was able to get them to the safety of her brother, Joe Marsden, it wasn't soon enough. Logan ran back to the only family he's ever know...that of his uncle Angelo, Enzo's younger brother. While Joe did what he could to save Grant from the Barberi influences, Logan embraces the "families" line of work. Unfortunately, Logan embraced it a little too well and that ultimately led him to the doorstep of new psychologist, Dr. Sophie Taylor.

Sophie crossed a professional line when comforting her client, Logan, turned into a sexual relationship. She knew it was wrong, but she was confident she could help Logan deal with the abuse he suffered at the hands of his abusive father and the guilt he felt when he couldn't protect his little brother. She thought Logan cared for her too, but when she's arrested by the police, he leaves her high and dry to take the blame.

As Sophie and Grant's romance heats up, their tie to Logan Barberi rears it's ugly head and both of their pasts start to catch up with them. With Grant's family after both of them, can they manage to outrun the mafia while staying out of prison?

This book is an emotional roller coaster. I swear, if there was a real Grant Marsden I would have to run up to the poor man and give him a huge, comforting embrace. Grant was one of the most emotionally gut-wrenching heroes I have ever read. The trauma this poor man has suffered at the hands of not only his father, but also his brother, is horrifying. He's a sweet, lovable man that breaks your heart every time he has to relive one of those awful moments with his family. Thankful he's met Sophie, who's more than capable of dealing with Grant and his issues.

Sophie was groomed to work with her father in his construction business. So when she choose to study psychology instead, her domineering father casts her out on her own. After her conviction, she's convinced her father hates her, not only for falling into trouble because of Logan Barberi, but because she caused the death of her mother. The woman was very good at covering up her lack of self-esteem. She took fault and blame for everything that went wrong and didn't trust her judgement in men. But McSailor (Grant's nickname) changed all that and showed Sophie that good men protect those that they love.

This book will rip your heart out for our hero and heroine while providing an excellent intrigue storyline with Grant's mafia family and what they're involved in. Have a tissue handy....you're going to need it!

My Thoughts

I was contacted by Omnific Publishing to review Jennifer Lane’s debut novel, With Good Behavior. Once I read that she’s a psychologist, I knew I had to read the book because she would likely apply her knowledge throughout. I am a budding social worker, and just took Psychopathology, so I definitely wanted to find out what she had to say.

With Good Behavior is not my typical read, but I enjoyed the break from my fantastical normality. It’s a fictional story about two normal people, from very dysfunctional families, who get jipped by people they cared about, and sent off to prison to pay for their naïve loyalty. We get some mafia action, some no-no’s in the ethics department, and betrayal, all wrapped up in a sweet love story.

The two main characters, Sophie and Grant, are very relatable and likeable. They both made bad choices and paid heavily for them. They are now out of prison and on parole because of their good behavior, trying to piece their life back together while holding on to their last slice of dignity (big social work value there!) Grant is a caring, compassionate soul and desperately trying to remain detached from his Mafia family. Sophie is trusting, empathetic and trying to maintain her happy façade, all the while extremely embarrassed and disappointed about the ethical mistake she made. They meet by chance and fall deeply in love, only to realize that “it’s a small world” has never been more applicable.

I really loved Roger, who ran an architectural boat tour in Chicago and gave these two felons a chance. He was hysterical with his potty mouth and easily ignited temper. He gave Grant and Sophie a hard time throughout but you knew he was a softie underneath. Another great character was Jerry, Sophie and Grant’s parole officer. Another I-will-send-your-ass-back-to-the-slammer-if-you-smile-at-me-wrong attitude but he fought for Sophie and Grant when the shit hit the fan. The Mafia characters in the book aren’t likeable in the least, go figure, but one of them tries to redeem himself, albeit too little, too late.

As a social work student, I enjoyed reading about the helping relationship, certain mental disorders, ethics, proper parenting, the lasting effects of domestic violence and child abuse, and the like. It was also interesting to learn about the background of the characters and how much our childhood experiences shape our future. Grant turns out to be quite the resilient young man, and he also had a trusted, caring adult/mentor during childhood. These two things have been proven to improve the risks for children.

Jennifer’s writing is fun, knowledgeable and smooth. I thought the chapter names were very clever and fitting, and always made me wonder “How does ‘Fucking Carrots’ fit into this story?” I think I might need to interview Jennifer because I have some questions for her! I definitely can’t wait to read the next in the series, Bad Behavior, in 2011.

My Favorite Quotes

Roger raised his eyebrows. “Madsen, you brought me Mother Fucking Teresa?”
“Hardly,” Sophie scoffed. “I doubt Mother Teresa was a convicted felon.”

Like most abuse survivors, he apparently blamed himself. He thought his inherent badness caused the abuse and believed nobody would love him once they learned of it.

“In my opinion, a trusting therapeutic relationship is key to change – a relationship in which the therapist and client can partner together to help the client cope with life better.”

I read With Good Behavior in a single day, and for a nearly 400 page book, I think that says something about the quality of the book. With Good Behavior was exactly the kind of book I wanted: engrossing, entertaining, and thought-provoking (without being too heavy on the thinking part). I loved how the psychology aspect was woven into this book, and it even got me thinking about my own life and how to improve it. Which, considering With Good Behavior is primarily a romance book, is a pretty neat and unexpected outcome. I also really enjoyed the fact that this was about two ex-cons because ex-cons are not exactly your typical romance novel characters. It's always refreshing to read something different.

In the full interest of disclosure, I'm going to say this: I am so not a romance fan. The only way I even remotely get into romance is if it's Chick-Lit, Young-Adult, or fanfiction. But most of the time, I stay away from the actual entitled "romance" books. However, I used to lurk in fanfiction circles and that's how I learned about With Good Behavior and decided to try to win it on First Reads. Luckily for me, I did because it absolutely did not disappoint.

First things first: I loved Grant. Yes, I did! I wanted my own McSailor. He was just so sweet and loyal and hot (my imagination can do wonders, thank you very much!). Sigh. Now that I got that out of the way, let me continue with the other characters: Sophie was actually a smart heroine. That's one of my pet peeves since other romance books I've read (Twilight, Loyalty's Web, Companions of the Night) tend to start out with a smart heroine and then proceed to make her lose many IQ points when she meets a hot guy. But maybe it's because Sophie didn't start out on that high pedestal (she was just released from prison, after all), but she didn't completely irk me. Again, she was intelligent and pretty kick-ass in her own right. Plus, she retained that fiery spark even after she met McSailor and didn't go all submissive-like. Oh, and I loved the fact that she was a psychologist since I'm currently doing my undergrad in psychology.

But I absolutely loved and adored the supporting characters (I'm a supporting characters slut! I tend to love them all more than the actual main characters). Roger might've been my favorite just because he brought the funny. I was seriously laughing out loud every time he appeared on the page. I also liked Jerry Stone with his heart of gold no matter how hard he tried to hide it. I also loved Sophie's relationship with Kirsten (I'm a sucker for a good female friendship in fiction). All of the supporting characters were made of win!

My absolute favorite part of With Good Behavior was that it was action-packed. It wasn't just a romance and wasn't all "I LOVE YOU." "NO! I LOVE YOU, MORE!" There was an actual plot that was filled with twists, turns, and a whole lot of suspense. From what little I've read of other novels in the romance and chick-lit genre, this seems to be more unique. Now, I've categorized With Good Behavior as chick-lit only because the thought of creating a "Romance" shelf and have this book all lonely within it made me break out into hives (not really, but it made me supremely uncomfortable. I'm weird that way...), but it's actually way more angsty than chick-lit and should go in a romance shelf (if it were any other person, but me that is), as well as a crime/mystery shelf.

Anyway, the point of this semi-coherent and very rambling review is to say that I completely recommend With Good Behavior. It was a romance with a lot more genres packed into it. It was also a really feel-good kind of story and may be one of the only romances I may like. I'm not going to go around yelling that romance is my fave genre anytime soon, but this one didn't make me want to poke my eyes out with a Twizzler. So, it was really pretty much full of win.
