This is no dig on the writer, but on Irene herself - hun, dear, Ms Winters…how many times do you have the thought “oh this will be a quick trip and then we can go home”? And how many times does it actually work out that way? It’s time to start preparing that every assignment is going to be long, complicated, and all fall to shit at some point.

I really like the way the politics and interactions between the various species becomes more nuanced and muddied and how the characters have to face these changes.

Overall, I enjoyed this book but it was my least favorite of the series so far. After the intensity of the last book, this one felt a bit like filler. If this was a TV series, this would be a mystery/monster of the week episode (maybe that is intentional given the title of the book). It does start to point towards a larger arc, however, which I think is going to be interesting for the world and characters.

These books are so easy to get sucked into! Very fun reads.

I felt that the lost plot wandered away a little from what I was expecting from this series. Having said that, I massively enjoyed the dragon politics, and the spy vs spy stuff.

But the multiple worlds can get a little lost in each other which makes it a little samey in places, and the overall plot didn’t feel too different. Plus we didn’t get any Vale, which is a crying shame. And not enough Kai either. Mostly just Irene being super librarian and we’ve covered that pretty well in the first three books.

Irene does get to show off her smarts, and it was nice to see her not always figure everything out at once. Any time she out smarts people is always fun. I wanted more fae, I feel they lend that chaos to the plot that shows this series to its best, but the dragons are always awesome, and the scene near the end was fun (if terrifying) to imagine.

All that said, it’s well written and fun, and easy to read. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was fabulous.

It’s a pretty good book and I’ve read the earlier books in the series, but for me personally this entire series so far has kinda been a struggle to read. I don’t really know how to describe how it’s been a struggle, but it has.

I somehow had way more trouble getting in to this book than with the others in the series. I think the fault lies with me though. I think I just wasn’t in the mood for this right now.
