This was a perfect Christmas read aloud. I did it in 3 sittings with my little kindergarten class. The story of a Finnish immigrant family living on the eastern seaboard in Early America. A story of family, of industriousness, of hope, of finding joy by bringing it to others, all without being preachy. The black and white illustrations by Barbara Cooney add to the charm.
