DNF - this book is steaming pile of shit and I can’t believe how much time I’ve wasted trying to trawl through it. My third and final attempt at reading Murakami, I have accepted that his semi interesting plots aren’t enough to make up for his seedy descriptions of women and poorly written, recycled protagonists.

My second favorite Murakami novel. Just brilliant from start to finish. If Wind-Up Bird Chronicle wasn't so amazingly brilliant then Kafka would be my favorite. Of course any novel that features a man who talks to cats is tops in my book.

What a weird book. It starts off simply enough. The young Kafka Tamura, 15, runs away from home. Fair enough. But reality quickly devolves from there. Alternate realities, strange powers, talking cats, a serial killer who targets cats, and Colonel Sanders. Ultimately, I think the book is commenting on post-war Japan and the ripple effects it had on certain people or classes. But it's also focused on finding yourself, untangling who you are from the dense forest of life. It was a good, weird book.

surreal. I did not understand the book, but enjoyed it all the same.
