DISCLAIMER -  I read this text as a set text for university meaning I did not pick this up for myself. It does not necessarily fit my usual reading selection so my review may be rather biased.

Very short story where all the relationships seem very toxic until the end. Not my kind of book, wouldn’t really recommend.

‘The Fox’ by D H Lawrence is a slim little story about two women living together on a small farm, and the ways a male presence impacts their relationship and way of life.

This was good! I really liked the two women “March” and “Banford” and the ways in which they differed and how those differences played off the other. The farm and forest setting is always a win for me and the subtle and tense atmosphere — so fitting. A bit simplistic by modern standards but I liked the theme of “intruders” and the idea of “predators” and in that, the comparison to mankind and the natural world.

I’m always thrilled to read a short classic, especially one that has elegant but accessible writing and bonus points for being *kinda* sapphic. Almost.

Not as sensual as I thought it would be. Works best as a short story but looked like a short novel. It just went too fast for me and I didn’t really get anything of it (at least anything new to reflect on).

A concise story about two women subjected to an insecure man who inconveniences, harasses and harms those around him so that he can get what he thinks he wants.

really 3.5; for me, The Ladybird is a 3.5-4, The Fox is a brilliant glowing 5, and The Captain’s Doll is a 3 - doesn’t quite hold a candle to the others
