Old-timey translation that does not appeal to this reader. Would have much preferred a modern translation.

Previously read another translation of this story, which I found much more enjoyable.

is this the first bpd novel? i have never felt so understood and also had all my mental illnesses called out by a book before 😭 goethe and werther original bpd royalty

'i treat my heart like a sick child'

'if i saw blood i should feel relief... i should like to open a vein that would procure me eternal freedom'

'i want to die! i lay down to sleep, and this morning, in the calm of awaking, that thought still remains firm, still quite strong in my heart: i want to die! it is not despair, it is the certainty that my sufferings are complete, and that i am sacrificing myself for you.'

literal mood lmao. ive written so many quotes down (more than i have for any other book ever 🥴) but those are a few of my favourites that really hit me full force in the gut with all the weight of my own sufferings :))

obvious tw for suicide and self harm, i recommend this book to anyone who isn't on the verge of doing either because it will make you want to top yourself in solidarity with poor werther x

Writing was beautiful enough for me to enjoy this book. But maybe because i never loved anybody this desperately i can't really get into the book. Characters were not relatable for me so i didn't get sad or tense while reading their strong emotions.
Nevertheless, it was short and there were a lot of places i highlight so i would recommend.
