A short read that’s hard to recommend to anyone. It’s a depressing book with a true-to-form misanthropic main character that’s interesting to read, but (for some readers) difficult to digest. That being said, it’s a poignant, well written story that explores messy themes of mental illness, addiction, abuse, isolation, and trauma.

It’s an excellent read for those who are fans of “morally gray/ambiguous” characters that are challenging to read and unreliable narrators.

I've been wanting to read this book for a while and it did not dissapoint. The sad reality of people with mental health struggles who self-sabotage when they don't have the support needed, and how it can impact the people around them and cause harm to themselves and others.
It's sad because the main character did horrible things but you can see how it got to that point.
Awareness on neurodivergency (which was hinted at earlier in the book if you understand the symptoms though I doubt the author had that knowledge of what it was) has improved so much now compared to the time the author wrote the book but more work still needs to be done.

It was a bit challenging to get used to the writing style since the narrative is sometimes fractured: seemingly banal things get described in detail while others are portrayed very short, raw and direct. This wasn't easy to get used to but helped a lot to immerse yourself in Yozo's mental state. I found the book very thought-provoking in the sense that Yozo's struggles were portrayed in a way that you would judge him but also find him relatable. Essentially, I would say that this is the kind of book where you could have a meaningful philosophical discussion about it and even though it is quite short it is not fast to think through or easy to read.

A book inspired by the diary entries of a japanes teen which ruins his life cuz of drugs, alcohol etc.
Explained in the most beautiful way possible by osamu dazai, the struggles of a boy who wears the mask of sarcasm to hide his inner dread of humans.
