Another version of the vampire story, but set as a buddy road-trip book, for the most part, and also as a "loner guy grappling with self-doubt" story. Not for those looking for something lighthearted. These vampires are "hemes" or "hemovores", while normal humans are "omnis" or "omnivores." It reminded me a little of [b:Peeps|186103|Peeps / Parasite Positive|Scott Westerfeld|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5132N0AWS5L._SL75_.jpg|1641139], in that it gives a plausible scientific basis for vampirism, and is more about the "realities" of life as an undead person than the romance of such an existence. The main character must mentor a newly turned heme, teaching him how to "feed" a little each night on a different victim--taking only enough blood to sate, not enough to kill the victim (which would turn him/her into a heme, and the killer into a nasty crazy killer). These hemes use a sharp implement to prick the neck, and are so quick that the victim, temporarily stunned during the process, doesn't even realize what's happening. A much less romantic view of vampires than you usually get. Our main guy is really depressed, as the story gradually reveals, because of what happened to his only true love, and trust me, if reading Twilight makes you want to be a vampire, reading Night Road will NOT. Worth a read for true vampire fans looking for something different. No elaborate fantasy mythologies here, just cold hard dead of night existence.

This book is awsome! The fact that they are hemes are awsome. The charectors are awsome. The story line is awsome. The ending is heart-warming.

It's a vampire road trip - two established hemovores take a newly-minted young bloodsucker out [b:on the road|6288|The Road|Cormac McCarthy|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21E8H3D1JSL._SL75_.jpg|3355573] to learn how a "heme" is supposed to operate. And yeah, these vamps are really touchy when it comes to people using the "V" word. It's as bad as any slur can get.

Cole is a world weary hemovore (DON'T call him a vampire!) who is summoned back to the Building by the leader of his clan. Cole's friend and fellow heme, Sandor, has accidentally created a new heme and needs Cole's help to train him in the ways of the hemovore world. The three embark on a road trip where Gordon's unwillingness to embrace the heme lifestyle may put all three at risk.

An extremely addictive book about about a male hemavore (that's what the vampires are calling themselves in this book) who winds up on a road trip training a newly converted heme to feed without killing.
