Flimsy not really likeable characters. A little bit of a male intellectual/cultural masturbatory exercise.

yeah this book fucked

exactly what I needed to read on the downtown B train in 85 degree weather just as I'm starting to lose hope in humanity and forget what good music feels like. just pure vibrant, genius prose that actually, genuinely spills off the page. Andrew O'Hagan is a god amongst men and this unfortunately deserved the booker.

This is a beautiful novel, following James and Tully, from the forming of their friendship in 1986, and following along through their lives up to 30 years later.

The vibrancy of the storytelling of their youth as they enjoyed their summer holidays, and the deep connection of their friendship 30 years later when facing an umtimely, cruel death.

I adored the focus on their impenetratble friendship over the span of 30 years, the deep connection and love they hold for each other, and to have a story caption and highlight male friendships.

I appreciated the lengths that each other went for for each other, and even at times, showing a deeper connection than other loved ones in their lives (wives, siblings etc) and it really paints a picture of platonic love. Whilst a heartbreaking book, it was beautifully written.
