Sort of a sad story about a family that only sees the dad once a year during Chinese New Year because he works so far away.

Very informative for kids about migrant worker parents, though I would’ve liked it to be focused on more.

Plus I love Chinese culture! Their culture is so interesting to read about!

Another story of a migrant worker, this time in China. Great to pair with MIgrant and Amelia's Road for multiple perspectives on a global scale.

A lovely story of New Year celebrations and homecomings from far away.

Must find it in Chinese too.

This book was an eye opener for me. This father comes home once a year for 3-4 days. The blurb at the end says that millions of dad's have to do this in China. I don't understand why you wouldn't move the family with you. These men are building things. This would be so difficult. Wow.

This is also about Chinese New Year. I appreciate this holiday as it is all about Red- my favorite color and about a new year. There is much for ritual in this culture around New Years. I believe this is the year of the Rooster.

The kids were confused by the father not living with them. I enjoyed the colors in this book and the simple way the story was told.

I enjoyed the illustrations and and the accuracy of the young girl's perspective of the world, but the text felt disjointed and I think most students would lose interest if this was used as a read aloud.

We enjoyed this during our nightly story time; both of my children marveled over the illustrations. The one thing keeping me from giving it 4 stars is a minor little thing...it's not exactly a spoiler, but just in case:
Spoiler throughout the entire story, the little girl refers to her father as "Papa," but then in the next to last sentence of the last page, it gets switched to "Daddy"
and this might've been merely an editing error, but it just struck me as odd.
