I am happily working my way through Natalie Haynes’s entire catalogue of writing, this book coming almost (library hold time notwithstanding) immediately after my finishing the audiobook for “A Thousand Ships” which i adored. Her narration is wonderful as well as her writing, she is funny, witty, and tells the story of these women with respect and from all angles. I highly recommend giving this a read, or a listen!

I've been in a bit of a nonfiction slump lately, but this book shot right through that. I had to turn the speed down a bit because the author has an accent and all those Greek names are 😵‍💫 but gosh is it a great read.

I really don't know much about Greek myths, I never got into them much as a kid, but I have been reading a lot of retellings of Greek myths as an adult and love them, so it was great learning some of the background about those amazing female characters who have gotten screwed over by so many other narratives. The chapter on Madea is possibly The best--it's incredibly intense and emotionally powerful. But I also love the chapters on Medusa, Pandora, and the Amazons.

The author also has a great voice and sense of humor which made this audiobook all the more enjoyable.

Ar first I thought it would be a good idea to read this but by bit in between books. This was not a good idea. The second half, I read without mixing it with other books and I enjoyed it a lot more.

I am really not familiar with all the characters of Greek mythology, so I had to properly concentrate to keep going.

I liked the reflections and overall POV. Well done.

Maybe now I might read Circe?

For some reason, I have never thought that the greek myths we know best, are in fact just one retelling and there are many others that could be more accurate, or at least portray a different view (that view obviously being from the women). This was such a good introduction to classical history, in a bite sized manner, and on characters that someone like me (semi decent ancient greek mythology knowledge) is familiar with. I really enjoyed seeing all the art and modern media retellings of famous myths, as well as the snarky comments from the author

A great read! This is a well-researched book delivered in an easy to understand, and oftentimes humorous, manner. I love the modern and feminist insight into these characters and how it's founded in evidence from the varying interpretations of each myth. I learned a lot about not just women in greek myths, but also about storytelling and how retellings reflect (and affect) the dominant social culture.

Some chapters were better than others (but I think this is natural and also affected by personal taste), and some of the analysis felt like a stretch or just commentary for the sake of commentary.
