I wanna start off by saying that there was a 6 month gap between me finishing book 6 and jumping into this one. I have very mixed feelings about this book and this series. I think that it fell off pretty hard honestly and overall I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed.

Constant readers are split into two camps, right? Those who like The Dark Tower and those who do not. As an avid reader of fantasy I always assumed  that I would slot into that former camp but unfortunately that was not the case.

This book felt like a stream on consciousness that had literally no editing. For some that was awesome because they’ve come to love these characters and the journey they’re on, for others (me) it just got a bit annoying and repetitive. Like what even happened in this book? A bunch of people died so that’s sick to spend all this time with these characters to have some of them have the least ceremonious and dramatic deaths I’ve ever read. I just don’t think it was done tastefully or with enough tact for my liking tbh.

Overall I’m just relieved and happy to finally be done with this series so I can go back to reading King’s collective body of work at a leisurely pace.

Was it the best book I've ever read? I do not know. Was it the best series I've ever read? I don't know either. But regardless I loved every second of it and couldn't stop reading until I was done. Roland's story was something I HAD to see concluding this year and I don't know why. I am happy that I did. And I recommend the journey for anyone who is even mildly interested in fantasy books. It's a damn good series. It didn't sadly make me a fan of Stephen King, but it did make me a fan of Roland. If KA wills it, I will read something by King again, but for time being I say farewell and thankee sai.

Second Read finished, I think I enjoyed this book, well the series really just as much the second time. Perhaps more so, there was less rush to have to read this to find out how it ends. SK writes at the end of the book about how it is about the journey not the ending, how the ending is there because it has to be. I wonder how many people did not read on? I did the first time & did again. The first time because I had to know, the second because well why not I already knew. I can see how the end could be disappointing to some, it is even to the author himself he writes. But it is THE END & the only one we will get to this story & it does fit with the themes of the series. I give this book 5* for the journey, for the characters, the tale, the world I love, the combination of two of my favourite things SK & Fantasy Books. Sure I could pick holes, have picked them with Friends & could list them here. But I feel little need. There place is not here (maybe it some other more detailed review perhaps) but I enjoyed the journey, still do, second time round. Likely if I live long enough, there will be a third. Maybe more. Warts & all, it is still a journey (these 7/8 books) I will take again.
