A very neat blend of fantasy and post apocalyptic sci-fi that is ultimately undermined by its 60s era casual sexism and creepy old protagonist.

Impressive in it's distance in the future. The book's SF idea is Transhumanism/post-humans. But, I can't say much for the book for anything else. The characters are ok. There is very little plot.

Now I get why people love Robert Silverberg.
Give me this kind of world building over the over-expository bloat that's popular these days. So many questions left unanswered, and that's perfectly satisfying.
I almost gave it five stars, but a few minor missteps and an ending that didn't quite connect with me, kept me from it.

Every book by Silverberg repeats the theme of reading minds. Not complaining but you know. This was another really good one by him that I read as a teenager and had been wanting to find and re-read for like ... over a decade. It's a great story.
