Thoughtful and sometimes blunt exploration of the author's thoughts, exploration, experience of a Black woman academic, and of having been a Black girl. Highly recommended.

This though provoking collection of essays is a necessary read in my book. The concepts that Cottom is working through in these essays about identity within the context of our greater societal structure are ones I cannot fathom. Cottom does not seek to placate those like me who cannot understand, but the intersectionality of the oppressions she presents is a well detailed explanation of her experience like many others. Several essays I had to pause to recollect my thoughts because of the content was hard to swallow, while I know they are the reality of our world. That is precisely why this book should be read loudly and passed on for all to hear.

Sometimes you don’t even feel qualified to review a book. The truth in these pages, her voice , her experience truly opens my eyes to expanding the authors and stories I’m reading and the people and issues I’m a part of! Thank you for your truth!
