I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book, Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, mainly due to the inconsistency of the plot structure.

However, this book is definitely a step up. The plot follows a linear structure and it follows classical conventions (closed circle, isolated mystery set on a train). But Ernest pokes fun at these classical conventions.

I also really liked the use of the book festival as an event on a train which then allowed Benjamin to poke fun at different specialisms within Crime fiction (legal, psychological and forensic thrillers) and this commentary was humorous.

The only negative thing for me, personally, was that I still found Ernest’s first person narration and breaking of the forth wall annoying at times but this was significantly less than the previous book Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone.

I enjoyed this one much more than the last one just because I didn’t try to remember every single detail like I did last time. The author gives so much information for the sake of “fair play” which I actually really like, but unless I’m going to read with a notepad and pen to keep track of, can be hard to remember everything. Just trust the author to remind you of important stuff when needed and enjoy the ride!

I really liked the first book in this series so I got this one too! This one wasn’t as good as the first - I’m giving it a 7.5/10.

This book has a bit of a slow start for the first 50 pages or so because the narrator is giving a lot of background information and referencing the first book. It then picks up nicely and has various amounts of hints and clues as to who is behind the murders. Just like the first book, I give the author props for the creativity of writing a book about an author writing a book based on actual events, however, that made this book very similar to the first in ways that made the humorous parts feel redone. Overall, it was intriguing and I enjoyed the book. I’m really looking forward to the 1st book being made into a tv series !

If you like crime style novels you’d likely enjoy this book !

Ok, I liked Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone, but this sequel was fantastic. What a great time! I hope more in this series are written. This one had a few more tough themes, but in my mind they were minor mentions,so check CW if that is something you need.
