I could not get into this one at all. The characters were flat and boring, even the main series ones. I have no interest in the plot nor the stakes of anyone within these pages, though to be fair, when there is only one villain, and it is Darth Vader, and it takes place before a New Hope … well, the ending is a foregone conclusion, and this is a waste of a story.

I really enjoyed this book! Highly recommend for any Vader fans out there. Cham Syndulla is a big part of the story as well so if you've watched any of the TV shows you'll be glad to see a familiar character. I did spend a while wondering whereabouts Hera was at this time, but after a bit of research I've concluded that the book takes place just after she falls out with her dad and leaves. She does get a nice mention at the end there though.

The power of the sith was on full display during this book, and I loved it. It really showcases just how powerful Sidious really is, even compared to Vader. Loved the scenes with him fighting side by side with Vader, using his lightsaber and force lightning. Love the raw power!

Vader himself was the probably the main character of this book, we got to explore some of his emotions regarding his betrayal of the Jedi and his relationship to his master.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable book, I'm very glad I read it.

An interesting, though sometimes flat, exploration of the tumultuous relationship between these two masters of the dark side.

So disappointed in this book. The summary sounded promising but it was a shallow book with no development and I felt no attachment to any characters.

This was a good book. Interesting one too in that you knew how it would end but you didn't know how they were going to get there and who would be left standing. It was a brutal book and a very quick read. It was all action and after reading Alphabet Squadron, this was 180 from that one. I enjoyed this.

super interesting insight into vader and palpatine’s relationship— the bits with the freedom fighters, especially towards the beginning, was a bit boring at times. but otherwise, it was a quick and enjoyable read.

This is a very strong book in the new Star Wars canon. Kemp writes a fascinating look into the relationship between Vader and Palpatine against the backdrop of an attack on the empire. Kemp writes the Dark Side in a way that is understandable, accessible, and compelling.
