Molly returns home after walking out of law school and the life she had to figure out what she wants to do instead. She is grieving and lost but when she sees old flame Ben she isn't sure what to do. He wants a second chance. Can Molly have a fresh start with Ben or wills he give it all up again?
This was really a bit of a surprise. I thought the pacing was perfect, the build up was intense and I felt for Molly she is clearly hurting. Ben was amazing. Highly entertaining.

meh
This book was mediocre. Nothing dramatic happened... Most of the characters were annoying. I doubt I will bother reading the rest in the series.

Derailed is about a girl named Molly whom feels lost in life I think, her father has passed away, her Mother is living with her sister and her family, and her fiance also passed away. She is in law school when the story first starts, and the decision to change her life comes within the first couple of pages and that is not the last of the big decisions that she has to make within the book. I really loved the way that Molly grew in to herself through the book, and at the end really seemed comfortable in her own shoes, even if it was a completely different spot than she thought she would be in.
I will say that I got a Nora Roberts feel from the writing (which to me is a good thing as she is one of my favourite romance authors), but there was even more depth to the characters in Alyssa's novels that I have read, they have been through more real life experiences and she talk about the feelings that they have because of this more than I find in Nora's novels.
One of my favourite parts of Alyssa's writing is that nothing comes easy to the characters, they have to work at it, or they really think through any decisions that they make, and there is no "insta-love", it actually goes along at a normal pace that relationships typically do. Also her portrail of the small town life, I know that it is not for everyone, but I will tell you, I wish I could live in Clayton Falls! It is the perfect setting for someone to go and relax and sort through what they need to as far as what to do with the rest of your life.
Let's go in to the men in the novel now....let me just say yum!!! So there is Ben, and he is Molly's old boyfriend from before she left town to go to law school, and he has his own issues sure, but he is very good looking, and his personality is pretty good too. Then there is Gavin, he is attractive sure, but talk about egotistical and overbearing! I did not like his character at all in this book, he was WAY to pushy and would refuse to take no for an answer, even when Molly made it quite clear.
I was really happy with the way that this book ended, and it could read like a stand alone for sure, but I am so glad that it is not so that I get to go back and visit these characters again with a new story. So overall, this is for sure a 5/5 for me, one of my favourite new adult novels hands down!

Molly has been walking through life with the burden of grief and guilt weighing heavily on her shoulders. Grief and guilt at the death of her father and if that wasn't enough add in the death of her fiancé coupled with the grief and the guilt she feels over his death. It all becomes too much one day as she is sitting in a law degree lecture when she decides she can no longer continue down this path. So she packs up and heads back to her childhood home.
Back in Clayton falls, the very last thing Molly wants is to start a relationship. And she definitely doesn't want to rekindle her old romance with her high school boyfriend Ben. But Ben has never gotten over Molly. He's been waiting for his chance to fix the mistakes that he made the first time around. And he's persistent!!
I just adored Ben!! I loved that he has grown into the man that Molly needs. I loved that he could look back and readily admit the stupid mistakes that he made. And I loved the passion with which he loves Molly!! But there is someone else after Molly's affections. And he is also incredibly persistent. But will Molly allow either man into her heart?
Molly's pain is palpable. Although she does her best to hide it from everyone, as the reader it's always there and you wear the burden right along with her. I loved the rediscoveries of friendships and love that she made. I loved the growth that she went through in being able to see things that had happened in the past more clearly.
Being a New Adult book it does contain sex, but it's definitely not too wordy or overly descriptive. It's really just written perfectly to capture the emotions that Molly and Ben are experiencing.
Filled with emotion, a wonderful strong female lead in Molly, an incredibly swoony male lead in Ben and the amazing writing of Alyssa Rose Ivy, Derailed is a book that you don't want to deprive yourself the pleasure of reading!!
4.5/5 Stars!

Derailed is a story about a girl who is trying to mend her broken heart by learning how to forgive, not only others but herself too. A journey to trust in herself and that it is okay to give love a second chance.
Molly has hit rock bottom - she's been going through the motions for a long time and she's finally realized that she can no longer go on this way. She drops out of law school, and having no other place to go, she decides to go back to her hometown for a while to hopefully bury her feelings and figure out what she's going to do with the rest of her life.
But before she even gets to Clayton Falls, we already know, it is definitely not going to be easy hiding out in a small town where everybody knows everyone's business before anyone else does. Especially when no one knows why she's left school and the true story as to what happened to her fiance.
Throw in a bad break-up with her childhood sweetheart and other ghosts from her past - Molly's need to keep a low profile and out of the town's gossip is impossible to fathom.
Molly is heartbroken in so many ways - I found it hard to relate to her, she blamed herself for everything that had happened to her fiance and her father. And I felt that she completely over-reacted to what happened with her ex-sweetheart; but she was 17 when that happened, and I have to admit, at that age, I know I wasn't one to be so reasonable or easily to forgave people over things that meant the world to me... but I was able to sympathize and feel her sadness and guilt. She wanted to be independent, protect herself from everyone - but in her situation, I knew that it wouldn't last that long. Especially after her first run-in with her old beau, Ben. Some feelings run deeper than you realize and it takes a strong, loving person to help you realize that.
Some would say that there is a love-triangle that happens in this story, and I am going to disagree. Yes, there's another guy who is introduced and tries to force himself into Molly's life - and I have to say, he was so arrogant and pompous, I truly disliked him from the start. But, and I won't be spoiling anything by saying this because right from the start there is no denying that this guy gives no competition with what Molly is going through nor her "non-relationship" Ben.
There are some secondary characters that are quite memorable, fun and at times hilarious - I adored Ronny the most! There's always that one person in the group that is always happy and their happiness is so contagious that you can't help but smile when you're around them. Kelly, Molly's childhood best friend - I really loved their relationship; it's one of those where even if you don't talk to each other for months on end, you always pick up right where you left off without a second thought.
Alyssa Rose Ivy has written a wonderful contemporary story that I highly recommend to all who love romance, second chances and swoon-worthy guys...

Derailed was different than I expected. I am super excited to see that this is going to be a series, but it ended pretty final so I will be interested to see where book 2 picks up. I have a feeling it may be one of those series that each book focuses on a different person, but I am not totally sure. (note: it is, I just checked the series out, and I think book 2 is where I will totally fall in love)
Derailed starts out in a law school, when they are studying for finals. I know exactly how Molly felt. I can't say that I have ever walked out on a class before, but it never seemed like something she really wanted to do. The story really starts when she goes back home to clayton falls. She reconnects with her ex, Ben. But she also meets Gavin, a cop that kind of stole my heart. That was the only sticking point I had with Derailed. I liked Ben and I loved Gavin, and Gavin just wasn't going to happen for her. Ben made sure it was only him. And I did like Ben and I did like how hard he tried for everything, but something about him always felt a little off to me.
Molly is determined not to fall back in with Ben when she gets home because she is still dealing with everything else going on in her life, but Ben is pretty insistent, and he is also a pretty great guy. Derailed sets up a very interesting town with Clayton Falls. I love the characters, and I think it will be fun to get to know them in books 2 and 3, especially since each book focuses on different people. I have a feeling Gavin will be my favorite.

My Thoughts: Occasionally I find a book that surprises me, sometimes making me glad I’m a book reviewer. This was one of those books. I know that I probably never would have discovered this book or this author any other way. I’m glad for the occasion.
I was immediately pulled into the mystery of what happened to Adam and why she blamed herself. I knew he was dead, but was unsure of what part she played in it. But that wasn’t enough to keep me reading. The main character, Molly, did that. Sometimes she was annoying with her denial and secrets. But it wasn’t overbearing. I really felt for her, because she was obviously struggling but trying to survive. I like Clayton Falls and find that it would probably be a cool place to visit. But everyone knowing everything or wanting to know everything would drive me crazy.
There were two –very different- guys who were interested in Molly, but it was clear that she was only interested in one of them. So there wasn’t much of a triangle, but I can’t say that she made the right choice. I can’t say that she didn’t either. For the most part, I like him. There were a couple of quirks/traits of his that Molly found comforting, but I found kind of disturbing. In the back of my mind I kept thinking he was going to go too far and do something twisted. But alas, not in this book at least.
Derailed was a fun and a quick to read. The characters were well-developed and the plot engaging enough.
