Perhaps this was the author’s intention, but all of the characters were pretty unlikeable in this book. I couldn’t find a coherent narrative in the novel. Meh.

Adults are liars, indeed.

There were some beautiful moments in terms of growing older, experiencing the hypocrisy of adults in one’s life. Some more relatable than others.

But mostly, I think I didn’t love every second of this novel because I’m missing the cultural context, in addition to what might’ve been lost during the translation process.

I enjoyed seeing a realistic character that constantly charges their mind. The prose was great and the dynamics between the characters even better.

However, towards the last quarter, to me, things just started happening and for what felt like random reasons. Overall it was still enjoyable but considering the book is still sizeable and a good section was lacklustre for me, it did bring my rating down.

Nonetheless I like Ferrante's style and I definitely want to check out the Neapolitan novels in the future.

We read this as part of book club, and I'm glad I read it, though I'm not sure I would have picked it up otherwise. This author has been on my radar for a while and the acclaim made me want to read something of hers. This book is well written, but may not have been for me right now with the world feeling so heavy. I had to take my time reading it and can appreciate the author's craft and ability to bring you right into the thoughts of the main character. It's gritty and thought-provoking and uncomfortable and very well done. It also impresses me that a book in translation still reads so well. This may be one of the book club choices I look back on and I'm glad it was chosen because it took me out of my comfort zone.

La Ferrante non perde un colpo. Potrebbe facilmente scalzare Calvino come mio autore preferito.

every character in this book gets worse the more you know about them ( ok maybe not everyone, if I lied, it's only because I'm an adult xD )but it's only realistic because how do you go through life without getting all splashed up with all the mud you walk on
