Immediately became one of my favorite historical romances, or favorite romances period. It's sweet, funny, and suits my sensibilities as a reader perfectly.

Zany schemes, outrageous fabrications, rampant sarcasm, nasty villains and a besotted fool made this an utter delight. I couldn't stop laughing. And it includes my most favourite micro-trope where the MMC is seemingly entrapped into an arrangement with the FMC and almost immediately he's like "really? Fuck yeah, this is great!"

I wanted to satiate my fantasies of men who are completely and helplessly in love. And boy, did this meet that criteria.

I was obsessed with how utterly taken Gideon was with Prudence, right from the start. It didn't fall under my standards of insta-lust/-love because it seemed quite clear that he admired her whackiness in their first meeting. Oh, the way he couldn't phantom why everyone else thought she was plain and ordinary, was so unabashed in vocalising that thought and defended her qualities? I stan.

For reasons beyond me, I found his nickname for Grace "Miss Limb" rather funny. The portrayal of his affection for her was quite endearing, right down to his rage when confronting whats-his-name-grandpapa.

What I hated though, is that the grandfather was given a mental illness to explain what drove him to violence and cruelty. I get that this was written in 2005 where perhaps mental illness was more stigmatised but man, it was disappointing.

And while I do not typically condone violence, I found Clotterbury's end well-deserved. I disliked that his wife and unborn child are collateral damage to his selfishness and greed. (But on second thought, maybe it was a far-sighted gift to rid them of his presence.)

There were women with names like Charity, Faith, Grace, Hope and Prudence. There were good uncles and evil grandfathers, secret pregnancies, highwaymen, kidnappings, dukes, rakes, adultery, elopement, forged letters, fake betrothals and misunderstandings galore. It was a total riot. I loved every minute of it.

And kudos for the funny banter being actually funny and witty for once.

Even when no one loves you, there is always someone to love, someone who needs to be loved. Always. You just have to look outside yourself.

It's been a long time since I've laughed this much from reading a romance novel! Not only that but the two main characters, Prudence (more like ImPrudence to steal a joke from the hero) and Gideon, were positively delightful. They shared a sense of humor, a moral code, and a love that really got me. Prudence, the courageous older sister of future Ton diamonds, and Gideon, a rake who had only dabbled with love, fought both each other and on behalf of each other in increasingly loving ways. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

This is perfect for lovers of Georgette Heyer who don't mind just a tad more sex and violence in their reading. The plot is a trifle obvious and predictable, but the clever, witty banter makes up for it. I laughed out loud in several places.
