Regency romance meets witty 1940s dialogue. Bring in a clever heroine who knows her own mind, a dash of rake-ish antihero and an assortment of well-meaning neighbours and relations and you've got yourself a cozy read. Honestly, I almost died when Venetia declared 'the only eligible husband for me is a rake!' However, reader, please beware, for the experience comes with some questionable outdated morals.

This is probably one of my least favorite by this author.

Started strong got a little slow in the middle and then got so great at the end. I love her resolutions they have me giggling and smiling and so happy!

Queen of the Regencies! One of the few romance authors I LOVE. Witty and wicked! This is one of her best, too.

Fairly classic Heyer Regency romance. Had fun listening to the audiobook with my husband while working on a project... "Oh, there's her love interest!" as soon as Damerel walks into the scene.

I enjoyed all of the witty repartee and literary allusions in this story. It was fairly light on the hijinks, which was all to the benefit for me.

I didn't really love either of the main characters, which is probably all that kept it from 5 stars for me. Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable, fun read.

This is a comfort read for me. I re-read it pretty regularly. There's some heaaaavy slut shaming in here. Without that, this would be a perfect book to me. I will continue to read it over and over, especially when I'm sad.

How is everyone in this book so selfish, and yet I am utterly charmed by it?  I think it's the recognition of the character flaws themselves and everyone just owning it as part of who they are.

This book was honestly so wild because it felt like it could get wrapped up around the 50% mark but a new wrench was introduced and shook everything up.

And we never even met the asshole brother that also abandoned them and his other responsibilities and then dumped his new pregnant wife and shitty MIL on them!!!
