heavy ableism in some areas, specifically regarding neurodivergencies including autism/adhd/cluster b personality disorders. enough good bits to prevent a 1 star for the heavy ableism, but YIKES. two reviews that put it into words better than i can:

Nothing I didn't already know from therapy, but has some useful ideas around how to have compassion for troubled parents while at the same time setting boundaries and learning from their mistakes.

The writing feels repetitive and not very informative/specific.

Absolutely a must-read for anyone who even vaguely considers that they grew up in any sort of toxic, abusive or emotionally immature relationship with their parents.
This book is for the ones who still say 'I'm sorry', who make sunshine when their world is rain, for those who try too hard to be 'good enough'. It's for those of us who have been doing it since childhood.
This book illuminated a lot of things in my own life- unhealthy traits I've developed, as well as underlying causes. The book uses real-life examples to shed light on examples of emotionally immature parents (which, in my opinion can be directed at emotional immaturity in general), as well as the two types of children that emerge from these relationships- internalizers and externalizers.
The book has been a real wake up call, as well as a beacon of hope with tools and mechanisms to escape the cycle of negative emotions and habits these relationships may have instilled.
It's a fascinating and beautiful read for anyone interested in psychology, and an absolute must read for anyone who may have felt empty, alone or unfulfilled from childhood.
If this speaks to you, absolutely read it. It's not a long book, and it will illuminate so much.
Happy reading!
