Wow this book was incredibly put together. The way the story unfolds and all comes together at the end is so detailed and intricate and glorious. The world is dark and fascinating and a joy to discover as you read. I was very skeptical about the 2nd person POV at first but I’m so glad I kept reading! The writing is amazing, I love the style and humor and even the little ways Jemisin uses formatting to shape the tone of characters’ thoughts. And I love Syenite so much!! She’s such a badass. I can’t wait to continue the series!

what the fuck, like actually. There's genuinely so many different moving pieces to this book. I have so many questions, just like, wow. I fucking called it that all POVs were the same person, I knew it. Also Syenite pissed me off so much, like it was just one stupid move after the other.

I was very confused in the beginning, and I’d say I didn’t quite understand what was going on until about 75 percent of the way through the book, but by the end I was very invested. N.K. Jemisin is a genius

Re-read! Such an easy 5 stars. I forgot how intense and triggering this book is (especially as a new mom), but N.K. Jemisin is just my everything. Now I want to re-read all her books.

Some things:

I didn’tunderstand the use of the 2nd person until about 2/3rds thru the book, and then thought it was rlly clever.

Characters were complex and loveable.

I have a history degree. That this book focuses on history, how it is told, and who writes it was so good to read and exceptionally well-done. The lore was sooo fleshed out.

A hard one to read in a slump. The world building was complex so thank gd for the appendix.

Dark, but never unnecessarily so.

Except every modern dystopian piece of media i have consumed recently has had cannibalism in it and my tummy hurts.

This story is heartbreaking in all the best ways. This Paul is three different girls, who are each struggling to survive in a horrible, post, apocalyptic world, and are struggling with her own individual journeys. The stories intertwined at a specific point, and the reveal of how they are interconnected is very well done. They all face some very tragic or deals because of discrimination, hatred for who they are and having to hide it from their community.

it’s also a story about love and loss, at its core, and how people can make desperate attempts to save themselves and the people that they love even when things seem hopeless
