Not a stellar Atwood.  If you started here, you wouldn’t get the breadth of her abilities.  Stan and Charmaine take a deal of 1/2 prison, one half house living period to escape a living-in-their car situation, only to discover the dark underbelly of the overall scheme.  Would have benefited from editing down, and other fixes.  Excellent narration by the talented Cassandra Campbell; adequate narration by the male voice,

Wow!!!!! So many things I love about this book - so many thought provoking concepts... Free will & choice & the intrinsic value of being able to make your own decisions, regardless of the consequences... Love and power... Human nature and judgment and how nothing is black or white - there are a thousand ways to look at a situation, and there are a thousand ways to react, and they're all valid in their own way... I'll come back and do a full review on this once I have time to sit and think and analyze...

Dull, for the most part. Attempts to straddle the line between blown out suburban satire (focusing on the absurd amoral lengths people go for comfort) and novel of the times. Unfortunately, it's neither funny enough, nor real to enough to succeed at either. All political heft this may have is squashed when Atwood refocuses the novel from a societal satire to one squarely on the American ideal of the housewife. I'm all for pointing out how good natured liberals can be put off by What Is to Be Done, but the way Atwood goes about it with the Charmaine and Stan characters betrays her more conservative sensibilities. Otherwise, she's still an excellent writer of views. The novel oscillates between Stan and Charmaine chapters. By shear tone you're able to tell who's view the chapter is in within a few words, and the characters, while broad, nonetheless remain consistent yet dynamic. All that being said, if I'm between an Atwood dystopia, bound to be full of a clarity of vision mostly unrivaled since Le Guin and Wolfe's passing, or a dime a binding dystopian novel with a title like Cities of Demons, I'll go with the Atwood.

This book is just...a lot, in all the wrong ways. Disappointing for a Margaret Atwood book, honestly. If you are easily squicked, please be mindful that if you endeavor to read this book that it is chock full of about the worst trigger warnings you can think of, and they weren't shied away from. The writing isn't what I've come to expect from Atwood, and the characters are unrelatable and pretty dense. I had fully intended to work my way through the entirety of this novel; but at some point I had to give up the ghost and put it on the elusive 'DNR/DNF' list.
Good luck if you take this one on!

Hmmm this was an interesting one, I’m not 100% sure how I feel about it. But overall I think the concept left a significant imprint on me, so I’m happy about that.

This was basically my first Margaret Atwood book AND official sci-fi book, so it felt a little dense and slow at times. There were times I could have abandoned it (especially around 75% through) but I wanted to officially finish a Margaret Atwood book. I’m glad I kept at it. it was fun to interpret a writing style I’m not used to and some of Atwood’s phrases are really funny, shocking, and original.

I wasn’t into the whole Elvis thing. Stan’s story bored me significantly more than Charmaine’s. I really looked forward to her chapters; her flighty character was so interesting and written so realistically well.
