I really enjoyed the premise, the existential musings and the strong relationship the main character develops with the animals. It was written as a report which didn’t connect with me and I found it dragged on and on, the endless repetitive descriptions of the weather, the chores, the landscape. I understand that that’s part of the journey, it’s just not usually something I find engaging.

This is a slow-paced, survival-focused version of post-apocalyptic fiction with strong similarity vibes-wise to I Who Have Never Known Men but more philosophical. While it only took about a day and a half to read, it honestly felt longer than that, partly because of the strong emphasis of vibes over plot and partly because this entire book has no marked chapters so even though I knew I was making progress it didn’t really feel like it (which would normally bother me, but since one of the major themes of this book is time and the unreality of it, it was definitely a purposeful formatting choice for this book). This also had a lot of commentary on loss, grief, and depression, so at times it felt really heavy, especially toward the end (**spoiler** honestly though, fuck the random man who murdered Lynx and Bull for no fucking reason **spoiler**). I’d definitely read it again and recommend it to others, particularly those who like IWHNKM or survival narratives in general, but I feel like it would take a certain kind of reader to really love this and I don’t think it was quite me.
