I really liked the story when I first started. I love the trope of how well do you know your parents. I thought I was going to get a suspenseful novel with drama and a big reveal. After the initial quarter of the story, I started getting irritated. Andy is a hard character to digest. How she is in her 30s and useless with no adult capabilities is beyond me. The first part where she breaks down after watching 2 people murdered in front of her and then her mother killing the guy, I understood her shock and her catatonic state. But the rest? Come on! How can she be this naive and stupid? I could not stand her POV and every 5 seconds she's having a break down. And this what throughout the WHOLE book! No real growth. Then the ending took forever. And the reveal wasn't all that impressive. By the end of the book, I was over it. And ready to be done.

It took me a while to get into it and I thought the first time jump to the past and the Jane/Laura perspective was confusing. I’m glad I kept going though because it was really good and a really solid thriller.

Sometimes Andy was a bit frustrating like I just wanted to shake her and tell her to make better decisions haha but she was still likable. Hated her and Alabama though.

This is the fourth book I’ve read from Karin Slaughter and she still manages to amaze me. The writing, characters, and plot always seem to suck me in. Like I’ve done before  with her other books, I teared up at certain parts. Finding out Laura’s past was rough.

Are Slaughter’s books kinda messed up? Yes, but I keep eating it up. And I’ll continue to do so.

Also fuck Nick and Paula.

This book was decent and I think the speed is what made it a 3.5 for me. It was super dense and hard to capture my attention because the background was so dense and thick. I am very interested to watch the Netflix show because I do believe that it will be easier to watch than to read.

I feel like if trigger/content warnings for Karin Slaughter books was a multiple choice question, the answer would be all of the above.
