Picked this up for bookclub and loved the first two thirds of the book. I found the ending challenging - like it both fit and made sense but I didn't want it to go that way (but can't think of a different, satisfying ending that wouldn't be even more cliche). I suppose it's the mark of a good book that it sticks with you, and I'll be replaying the end looking for alternative scenarios (not unlike replaying a video game). I did like the meta elements in the book a lot - unexpectedly, since I don't really play games. Overall, recommend.

This book sucked me in right away.  It’s my favorite book of 2023.  It has so much to offer.  Trauma, relationships, ways we experience love and loss, social hierarchies, growing up, and some really meaningful real world issues.

As a gamer, and pop-culture lover, it hit all the right spots for me.  None of the main characters are perfect, but you can see how their past traumas have shaped them.

It was a decent book, but I would not say it blew me away. I can't say whether that is because of my high expectations, or because of the book itself though.

What a beautiful, unique exploration of friendship and love and grief and growing up. Putting my thoughts into words is difficult, because they're so nebulous, but I can say I loved my experience reading this book, always wanting to pick it up and getting sucked in whenever I did. I wanted to love the characters, especially Sam, more than I did, but isn't that how life is? I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

Even if I didn’t enjoy every element of this book, it was completely worth the read. A unique story that is heartbreaking and makes you feel a lot.
